 To
the south of the town are waymarked routes Mach 1, 2 and 3. At about 19
miles Mach 3 is the route daddy taking you way out into the wilderness
with breathtaking forest, mountain, waterfall and valley scenery. Check
out the premium quality singletrack, leg cooking climbs (500 m at the
highest point), and fantastic technical descents.
A mega day out can be had by combining Mach 3
with more trails to link up with Nant Yr Arian (near Aberystwyth) where
you can ride the Summit Cycle Trail. Have lunch and then make your way
back to Machynlleth - a truly epic day in the saddle and all of it off
road !
To the north is the huge Dyfi forest - home to the widely praised Dyfi Enduro. This area can be split into sections:
- Pennal and Pantperthog: Both contain fine,
natural single track and a ride along Tarren Ridge gives you superb
views of the Dyfi Estuary.
- Ceinws, Dyfi Main and Gartheiniog: This is a free ride heaven and
is set to become the next 'must ride' area. Along with it's existing
enduro trails there are plans in place to develop more purpose built
single track.
Visit MTB Britain for an example of a ride through the Dyfi Forest.
Machynlleth is centrally located along the
National Cycle Route 8 and also Glyndwr's Way - a long distance trail,
much of which can be cycled with a bit of forward planning. It is also
midway between Coed Y Brennin to the north and Nant Yr Arian to the
south.
"An innocent enough looking
trail gathered momentum before hurtling into the woods to meet the
gnarliest, ugliest, sharpest rocky trail imaginable" MBR Magazine feature on Machynlleth May 01
